there's a lot of bureaucracy at the united nations. there's a lot of things that don't get done. and i'm not going to surprise any of your viewers by saying war has happened under its watch and war is going to continue to happen. but in that 70-year history that just ran through, there are certainly examples of the u.n. having some successes. it plays a critical role in the elimination of smallpox. it has the sort of legitimacy that allows it to do tribunals that have prosecuted everyone from slobadon milosevic and others. but are there epic failures despite the approach to trying to resolve them. syria, libya, a number of disasters including in yemen, which we still haven't seen any sort of end in sight to. >> i think syria, by all accounts is a glaring example of one of the big failures of the u.n. so, jim, when you look at the 70 years of united nations, do you feel that overall the good outweighs the bad? >> i do, jonathan. you know, have bad things happened during the time of the u.n. over these 70 years? yes, of course they happened. would they have happened without a u.n.?
